The old hangar, Burrough on the Hill
A brand new state-of-the-art rehabilitation centre for young people across the county injured in sport is planned to be built in Burrough-on-the-Hill, near Melton.
Former Leicester Tigers and England Under-21 rugby star Matt Hampson (30) is seeking planning permission to build his Get Busy Living Centre at an old aircraft hangar site.
Matt, who lives in Cold Overton, set up the Matt Hampson Foundation to help injured young people after being paralysed from the neck down while training with the England Under-21s nearly 10 years ago.
He said: “Building a place like this has long been a dream of mine. We’ve been given a 50-year lease on an old aircraft hangar site at Burrough Court thanks to the venue’s owners.
“I’m really taken aback by their kindness and hopefully my dream can now become a reality.
“The foundation anticipated it would cost £500,000 to build the centre and that it wouldn’t happen for 10 years – until a fundraiser in London last year raised £160,000 and changed all of that.”
The Get Busy Living Centre would enable the foundation’s beneficiaries to receive rehabilitation through physiotherapy. It would also include therapy rooms, a gym and meeting rooms.
Matt added: “The centre would be vitally important in helping young people to interact and share their experiences. There’s still a substantial amount of work and fundraising to be done for the centre to go ahead but I want this building to be the focal point for the Matt Hampson Foundation.”
